Facing a difficult situation in the absence of the “full story” often causes us to fill in the blanks with assumptions. Left unchecked, this mechanism tends to create expectations that limit positive outcomes. Make it a practice to check your bias at the door. Examine people and problems as they really are by asking great questions. Listen with an open mind, and the situation will reveal itself fully. By doing this, you’ll avoid judgments that limit opportunities—creating new possibilities for your people at the most trying of times.
