Recently, in response to one of his direct-reports giving notice, a CEO said, "I'd hate to lose you—you're one of the few people around here who actually cares." A highly dedicated person is rare, and truly worth their weight in gold. Without a deliberate effort to find and retain such people, they will always be the exception within your organization. Absent such focus, folks tend to fall in the middle of the "caring" bell curve, which carries a significant cost. It’s worthwhile to face facts about whether or not dedication is the norm in your organization—then ask yourself, your people, and trusted advisors for ways to promote people and policies that lift the level of caring within your enterprise.
